On a volcanic peninsula stretching into Hungary’s Lake Balaton, Central Europe’s largest lake, lavender has been part of Tihany’s story for nearly a century. First introduced to the area’s mineral-rich soil through the Tihany Abbey’s historic lands and Benedictine Monks in 1055, the crop flourished in the 20th century under Hungarian herbalist and chemical engineer Bittera Gyula, who helped transform the hillside into fields of purple by the 1930s.

Today, that same landscape blooms every June, setting the stage for one of Hungary’s most atmospheric seasonal experiences, now complemented by a growing collection of refined stays, wellness offerings, wine experiences, and culinary stops.

From June 15–30, the Tihany Peninsula will transform into a sea of purple for the 2026 Tihany Lavender Festival, where for two weeks visitors can sail the lake at sunset, formulate their own perfumes in a working botanical lab, and eat lavender-infused desserts at a Michelin-recommended wine cellar.
