Before he began creating The Chain short course at Streamsong Resort in Central Florida, Jim Craig, design associate/shaper for the team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, completed work on a second golf course at McArthur Golf Club in Hobe Sound, FL. It’s the first Coore Crenshaw design in the Treasure Coast hotbed that includes Michael Jordan’s Grove VVIII, The Medalist, Hobe Sound Golf Club and Jupiter Hills. The APOGEE Club, co-ownedby Miami Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross is expected to open its first course – designed by Gil Hanse – this fall.
Tom Fazio – at the height his design career – and PGA Tour star Nick Price in 2002 built the original course at McArhtur between the sand dunes and wetlands of Southeast Florida. The second layout, called the “West’’ course, is expected to open in November.
“It will be very different than what you’re used to seeing in the state of Florida,’’ Craig told me. “It’s quirky in spots. Lots of contour in the fairways – more like a wrinkled shirt versus and ironed shirt.’’
