You know you’re in for a Greek culinary treat when the veteran server asks: “Do you want something that’s just Greek, or do you want something that represents us?’’
That was my introduction to Meraki Greek Bistro in downtown Miami – of the four outstanding Green restaurants owned by Meraki Hospitality Group. Led by Managing Partner Alex Karavias and Executive Chef Giannis Kotsos, Meraki Hospitality Group other eateries include Meraki Gyro on South Beach, Meraki Greek Bistro in Coconut Grove and its newest location, Meraki Brooklyn in the Borough’s growing Williamsburg neighborhood.
Opened earlier this year, Meraki Brooklyn brings together the same passion and flavors that have made the Miami locations among the more popular Greek restaurants in South Florida.
And it all begins with that “what represents us?’’ question.
“‘Meraki’ means to put something of yourself into whatever you do, and that’s exactly what Chef Giannis and I have been doing since we opened the original Meraki location,” Karavias said. “Our cuisine is a reflection of our love for Greek tradition, featuring fresh ingredients and classic flavors.’’
The Greek tradition is evident throughout each restaurant, each of which features handmade tables and chairs imported from Greece.
“We import them every few years and make sure everything looks good,’’ Karavias said. “We only serve Greek beer and Greek wines. Over the years we’ve built a great Greek wine program.’’
Born in Charlotte, N.C., where his father worked as a chef, Karavias’ culinary journey has taken from the Piedmont to Washington, D.C., and finally to to Miami, where in 2004 he began at Taverna Opa on Ocean Drive and then moved to Nikki Beach and Pearl.
Karavias also spent time at Greenstreet in Coconut Grove, and eventually to China Grill Management’s 5th Street location on South Beach before The Social at Sagamore.
In 2014 – the same year he met Kotsos – Karavias finally opened his own place – Freshko Gourmet coffee shop in downtown Miami.
“I was able to polish my management skills and slowly grow that business into a success,’’ Karavias said. “And it gave me a chance to build a bigger and better restaurant.’’

“There weren’t really a lot of options for good Greek restaurants,’’ Karavias said. “We were one of the first Greek restaurants that focused on dishes that are really Greek.’’
Want proof? Don’t pass on the show-stopping Char Grilled Lamb chops, served with lemon potatoes & grilled vegetables.
“We prepare lamb (from New Zealand) in so many different ways,’’ Karavias said.
The Marinated Grilled Octopus drizzled with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Lemon & Oregano over Garbanzo Beans, is another “must have,’’ and the Greek Potato Casserole itself is worth a visit.

“Very simple ingredients but served in flavorful ways, with attention to eating in healthy ways, ’’ Karavias said. “We do a lot of Green dining experiences with a lot of shared items for groups and families.
“Many people think our menu is too big, but Greek menus tend to be very diverse. People like to order from the table. And we have a lot cheese options and vegetarian options. “I think we have a good formula for blending traditional good greek cuisine and molding into the Miami scene, with items like pineapple and spinach.’’
Likewise for Meraki Brooklyn, where guests are transported to the Aegean Sea with its decor featuring breezy white curtains, rustic wooden floors, cozy seating and gorgeous bar with bougainvillea adorning the ceiling. Each is designed to evoke the warmth and charm of a Greek taverna. And with its new outdoor patio, diners can now enjoy the fresh Mediterranean dishes al fresco through all seasons.
“There’s a certain connection to the locals in Miami and New York City,’’ Karavias said. ”I first looked in Manhattan, but met a broker who showed me some spaces in Brooklyn. I fell in love with the Williamsburg area. It’s become home to a lot of new artists and culinary leaders. So, it’s an exciting time to be be there.’’
