Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point, CA., continues its year-long 40th anniversary celebrationby looking back at the people, events and programs that have helped shape the beautiful Southern California golf property.
The oceanfront Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design opened for play in 1983 and has since hosted many of golf’s best, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Arnold Palmer. Fred Couples, Mark Calcavecchia and several other PGA TOUR, LPGA Tour and Champions Tour players also played the iconic course when Monarch Beach Golf Links hosted Hyundai Team Matches in 2001 and 2002. Celebrities and dignitaries who have frequented Monarch Beach Golf Links include Bruce Willis, the late Jimmy Buffett, Jessica Alba, Tom Holland, and Shaquille O’Neal.
While much of Jones Jr.’s original design remains unchanged, a 2015 course renovation added new tees and refreshed bunkers. The 6,645-yard, par 70 course still has the sweeping Pacific Ocean views and dramatic sand bluffs that first attracted Jones to the property in the early 80s. The course has been the backdrop for the television show Real Housewives of Orange County and commercials featuring golfers Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson.

Since opening in 1983, Monarch Beach Golf Links has hosted thousands of charity golf events, in turn raising more than $30 million for local and regional charities. The American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and the Boys & Girls Club of Capistrano Valley are just a few of the organizations who have benefitted from hosting charity golf tournaments at Monarch Beach.
Monarch Beach continues to complete sustainability initiatives including implementing water conservation measures to reduce water usage and removing five-plus acres of grass land and replacing it with native California flora and plants creating habitats for the Monarch Butterfly. In addition, the club adheres to Troon agronomy best cultural practices including mowing heights, rolling, aerification and verticutting, reducing the need for chemical inputs.
Monarch Beach Golf Links is also home to one the world’s most unique and exemplary caddie programs. “Waterman Caddies” are part personal golf concierge and part surf buddy as guests enjoy the golf expertise and assistance of a professional caddie or forecaddie, while gaining insider surf knowledge of Salt Creek Beach and Monarch Bay. Whether assisting with club selection, reading greens, food and beverage orders, ocean temperatures or swell directions, the Waterman Caddies have tons of local knowledge.
