One of South Florida’s more popular, successful and worthwhile charity golf events will take place Feb. 26 at St. Andrews County Club in Boca Raton when the Israel Cancer Association USA hosts its 14th annual golf tournament. ICA USA is expecting more than 100 players to participate in the golf tournament, lunch, raffle and awards dinner.
This will be the third consecutive year St. Andrews is home to the event, which drives landmark scientific cancer research to Israel.
“The tournament is fun, well organized and for a great cause,’’ said Paul Clivio, director of golf at St. Andrews.
“St. Andrews is a wonderful host and a terrific venue,’’ said Peter Brown, a Palm Beach resident and co-chairman of the event, whose family has been involved in cancer research since the 1970s. “We have a lot of grassroots support, as well as those who contribute six figures. Just a lot of good people.’’
Since its inception in 1994, ICA USA has directed fellowships to individual researchers at hospitals and research institutions throughout Israel. Every dollar that is donated to a fellowship goes directly to the researcher.
“It (money) goes right to the doctors, so they can focus on their science and live in the country they were born in and they love, which is Israel,’ Brown said.
ICA headquarters in Palm Beach comprises the U.S arm of the Isreal Cancer Association, the oldest, largest and leadng health-related charitable organization in Israel.
“Ths year is more important than ever, as 35 percent of the doctors and scientists have been called to war,’’ Brown said. “The research must continue – and will.
“Israel is known for its extraordinary efforts in medical advancements and interventions. One of my fears is that people see Israel as a warrior – and a successful warrior – but the reality is, Israelis would rather be peaceniks and save cancer for the world.’’
