The Western Hotel & Spa in Ouray, CO., one of the West’s great small towns, is bringing a luxury spa experience with the opening of the Grotto Spa, a signature wellness amenity that further solidifies the recently renovated Colorado boutique hotel icon as the gold standard for hospitality in the Mountain West.

The Grotto Spa, built into the hotel’s  historic red brick and stone foundation below the light-filled timber-framed hotel above, is steeped in Old West heritage and deeply reflective of its surrounding natural environment. This new atmospheric and reflective space rounds out the amenity lineup at The Western which reopened last spring and also includes an acclaimed wood-fired kitchen, historic saloon and dining hall, general store, and sprawling outdoor patio spaces.

A hand-troweled terra cotta and black bottom pool, cold plunge, and dry sauna, along with extensive lounge areas, mark the main features of the space. The spa’s three treatment rooms offer various holistic services, including massage therapy, facials, and Nordic skincare treatments from accomplished practitioners. Nordic products are featured with a focus on clean lines free of unnecessary additives, carefully sourced natural ingredients, and locally foraged botanicals. A traditional barbershop within the spa also provides classic hot shaves and salon services, perfect for pampering or preparing for special events.

The Grotto Spa aims to serve the area’s flourishing density of high-performance athletes and travelers as well, who are drawn to the world-class, year-round recreation and scenery. Those lured to adventures such as heli-skiing, ice climbing, backcountry skiing, rock climbing, Silverton Mountain, or Telluride Ski Resort can now lounge, linger and relax in the calming subterranean environment  of The Grotto Spa.

Combining the hotel’s Old West heritage with natural elements, the warm, indirect lighting on dark wood cladding and original masonry adds to the inviting, historic ambiance. A notable feature is the sealed tunnel visible from the soaking area, a remnant of the hotel’s frontier-era past in a renowned red-light district. Today, the soaking area provides therapeutic respite for guests to revive themselves from long days in snow and sun or as an inviting setting to take an unhurried soak and interact well into the night. The spa’s atmosphere is further enhanced by the artwork of renowned Colorado artists Tom and Matt O’Neil, through their  revived silver leaf etching techniques and captivating landscapes as well as work by renowned photographer, David Heiser.

The Western Hotel & Spa is a 16-room boutique hotel in the heart of the  Downtown Historic District of Ouray, Colorado. This 131-year-old landmark combines mining-era elegance with modern amenities, including an original saloon, restaurant, general store, and the newly opened Grotto Spa.
