The Metropolitan (New York) Golf Writers Association has announced that GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedofrd Hills, N.Y., will receive the distinguished 2023 Club of the Year Award at its 71st National Awards Dinner on Oct. 11.
“We are thrilled to receive this honor from the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association and look forward to continuing our efforts to make sure our members and guests reap the benefits of our core principles for generations to come,” said Grant Gregory, Chairman and Founder of GlenArbor Golf Club. “Our mission revolves around four key pillars: the traditions of golf, with an emphasis on camaraderie and friendly competition; continued stewardship of the land, illustrated by our dedication to conservation; a commitment to giving back through charitable partnerships; and a continuous lifetime of learning.”
The golf course has been the site of numerous MGA championships, as well as several professional charity golf events such as the annual Berenberg Invitational, which brings legendary golfers such as Gary Player, Tom Watson, Fred Couples, Bernhard Langer to the club each year. In the past two years, the event has raised more than $1.5 million for the University of Nebraska Buffet Cancer Center for the cure of pancreatic cancer.
In addition to the championship course, a world class short game teaching facility which was designed by World Golf Hall of Famer Gary Player, the grounds also include a state-of-the-art teaching center. GlenArbor also conducts numerous golf academies and boasts a Prodigy program that has produced many competitive young golfers over the years.
“The Metropolitan area of New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey is one of the very top centers for golf in the world,” said Player. “About two decades ago, I was approached to design GlenArbor Golf Club just outside New York City in Westchester County.”
“The Gregory family put their trust in me and my staff to create a unique and environmentally conscious course, that was steeped in tradition and tucked away from distraction. I was elated to learn the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association gave GlenArbor the distinguished honor of being named its Club of the Year. Many congratulations to everyone involved that makes this place so special. They are all true stewards of the game we love.”
GlenArbor Golf Club is immersed in a storied history. George Washington’s troops marched through the land, and John Jay, the first Supreme Court Chief Justice, lived nearby. The site was owned by Harold T. White, whose wife, Ruth Underhill White, was the 1899 U.S. Ladies Amateur Champio. Her trophy is on display in GlenArbor’s clubhouse.
GlenArbor Golf Club is the latest in a renowned list of clubs that have earned the MGWA’s coveted Club of the Year Award. The award is bestowed upon a Met-area club “for upholding the spirit and traditions of golf through energetic support and consistent dedication to the game.”
The first recipient of the MGWA’s Club of the Year award, in 1980, was Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.
