Black Desert Resort Golf Course in Ivins, Utah near St. George, will officially open 18 holes to daily-fee play on May 27. The last design of the late Tom Weiskopf’s storied course architecture career, Black Desert’s emerald fairways are carved amid ancient black lava fields and are surrounded by Southern Utah’s red rock mountains.

One of the country’s more anticipated new golf resorts, Black Desert Resort, a Troon Golf-managed facility, this past November opened nine holes to limited preview play, allowing the remaining nine holes to grow-in and mature. An additional 19th hole – an 85-yard par 3 set lakeside and terraced into the black lava – will open later this year. The resort helps solidify the St. George/Zion area one of the up-and-coming golf detinations in North America.

Weiskopf and his design partner, architect Phil Smith, designed the par-72 course with playability in mind, with most fairways 70 to 100 yards wide. The course features two drivable par 4s – the fifth hole and 14th hole – a Weiskopf hallmark, bringing both strategy and risk/reward elements into play. The property’s distinct black lava rock, called basalt, originated as lava that intermittently flowed from ancient volcanoes.

Amenities will include a snack bar specializing in unconventional finger foods, a text service for on-course, on-demand food and drink delivery, as well as high-tech carts with GPS and well-stocked coolers.

Reef Capital Partners is developing Black Desert Resort. Upon buildout, the property will offer 150 hotel rooms; 1,050 residences; miles of on-property trails; a wellness spa; and 80,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. The property will also feature 75 single-family estate lots and approximately 214,000 square feet of commercial space, with the amenities of the resort center available for full-time residents.
